18 of the Scariest Retirement Facts You Should Take to the Polls

They say hardest part of getting old is having to live through it.  I say, it sure beats the alternative!  Although, the longer you live, the more you will have to endure the political theater of presidential elections.  Again, still beats the alternative.

The point of this show will not be to give you any of my opinions as to which candidate you should vote for.  I will mention political parties but only in the context of how certain financial attitudes have been recorded in polls.  Since this is the season of the polls leading you to the polls, I thought I would drop in a set of financial facts, attitudes and behaviors that you may relate to. 

After all, who among us cannot relate to concerns regarding:

• Why we live longer but, may not want to
• What role debt plays in a financially successful retirement
• What is the #1 biggest expense few even consider in retirement
• What the number one fear of retirees vs. millennials is about retirement
• And of course, all the polls/surveys one can fit into 18 scary facts!

Being that this show sits right between the scariest dates of the year (Halloween and Election Day), it seemed appropriate to contribute to the more frightened side of our existence.  Hopefully, tuning in will provide you with some data to frame your emotions when participating in the latter day.

I suspect only folks in the warmer regions of the country have thought about what to do about such a thing.  If you are having these thoughts elsewhere, I would say adjust the meds or find a new neighborhood!

I actually had to deal with this very subject only a few days ago.  Really.  More on that during the show.  So, what does this have to do with insurance, money, retirement, etc.?

Yes, you could call me a bit out there to think that it does but, in fact, it made me think of those very things.  You see, life can be very unpredictable.  One day you are out walking on a well-worn path past a beautiful pond in the woods and next, a Python lurches from the weeds hoping to make a family member its lunch.

The same is true for financial planning.  Many folks feel the false comfort of a well-worn path.  It seems safe, especially if so many others tell you so.  But, if the unexpected were to occur, how would you even know how to adjust.  Would the Python in the pond prove fatal, or would you have a response?  Better yet, wouldn’t it be best to distance yourself from the threat before it became one?

In this show, I will get into some details about:

• The real story about my encounter with a 10ft Python in the wild

• What being financially unprepared does to people, families and businesses (real life stories)

If you are like most, you are convinced the cause of my missives such as this are absolutely the items listed above…particularly the first three!  Well, you may be right. 

But consider this; if it weren’t for these things, many a great story of history would never have happened, much less been told.

Presidential Politics & Your Money

Both presidents and politics will take your money…make no mistake about it.  Pick your party, pick your horse, it all comes down to your very individual economics.  Sucks, right?!

Yes, it does.  The worst is, even the immense power granted to me by my hundreds of millions of listeners is not enough to sway the process to our benefit.

So what will?  Certainly the slings and arrows of being unprepared will no doubt leave you at the risk.  Trust the market or trust guarantees.  Think guarantees will leave you short…think again.

I will talk about the greatest myths I have ever seen during such explosive times such as:

• What is “Safe Money”
• Why “risk” is what you need to leave on the floor of a casino

• How security done right can beat the bejeebers out of risk oriented gain hopes

Ah Fall.  The time of year when the nights are getting colder, the days are getting shorter and the leaves are beginning to turn their beautiful explosion of color.  What better time to sit down with all your financial documents and do a seasonal review!?

So now that you are officially convinced I have lost my marbles, I will continue to make my case.
Why do this in the Fall you ask?  It is Fall clean up time I say.  You do it in your house.  You do it in your closets.  Why not take that same fastidiousness and apply it to your financial life?

I can tell you why:

• You need to remind yourself of everything you have
• You need to get them in order before the distractions of the Holidays
• You need to not get caught in the “I’ll do it in January” trap
• You need to make last moves for taxes before the year runs out
